Daniel Negari: Pioneering the Next Generation of Domain Names with .XYZ and Beyond
In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, visionaries like Daniel Negari are not just adapting to change; they are actively shaping it. At the helm of a groundbreaking mission, Negari is poised to redefine how we perceive and utilize domain names, aiming to establish .XYZ as the ubiquitous go-to extension for the internet’s next generation. With ambitious plans and a proven track record of strategic investments, he’s demonstrating a clear commitment to transforming the domain name industry.
At the remarkably young age of 27, Daniel Negari had already distinguished himself as an astute investor, skillfully building an impressive portfolio that spans both physical real estate and the lucrative virtual realm of domain names. His entrepreneurial journey, marked by foresight and a keen understanding of market dynamics, prepared him for the monumental task of disrupting established internet conventions.

Negari’s experience is deeply rooted in the domain name sector. As an active domain investor, he founded the third-level registry .com.de, demonstrating his early grasp of niche markets and registry operations. Furthermore, he runs a successful web design and advertising agency specializing in premium domain names and offers comprehensive domain management services for owners of high-value domain portfolios. This extensive background provides him with a holistic understanding of the domain ecosystem, from registration to monetization, making him uniquely qualified to lead the charge into the era of new Top-Level Domains (gTLDs).
Now, his focus is squarely on the innovative wave of new gTLDs. Anticipating a paradigm shift in how digital identities are formed, Negari is set to launch at least two, and potentially three, significant top-level domain names. Among his applications, he secured .XYZ as the sole applicant and successfully outmaneuvered competitors like Donuts in an auction for .COLLEGE. His ventures also include an application for .NOW, underscoring his comprehensive approach to the evolving domain space.
This isn’t just a digital investment; it’s a tangible commitment. Negari has invested heavily in this burgeoning business, even acquiring a physical building in Las Vegas to serve as the headquarters for his rapidly expanding company. This strategic move signals his long-term vision, preparing for an operational scale that he envisions will support millions of domain name registrations within just a few years.
We recently had the opportunity to speak with Daniel Negari, delving deeper into his ambitious strategies for these transformative new gTLDs.
The Strategic Genius Behind .XYZ: A Universal Digital Identity
Question: Why did you choose to pursue .XYZ? Did owning xyz.com influence your decision to apply for this particular gTLD?
“My journey with .XYZ began with the acquisition of xyz.com, initially intending to launch an ICANN accredited registrar,” Negari explains. “During the accreditation process, I received an overwhelming number of requests from internet users worldwide who were eager for .XYZ subdomains and @xyz.com email addresses. This existing, organic demand profoundly influenced my later decision-making.”
Shortly after achieving ICANN accreditation, the groundbreaking new gTLD program was announced. Negari embarked on an extensive research process, compiling a spreadsheet with thousands of potential gTLD combinations. “I was searching for an extension that was the shortest, easiest to remember, and most generic possible,” he recounts. “Ultimately, for me, that was .XYZ.”

The existing ownership of xyz.com provided a unique advantage. “It confirmed an existing demand by internet users for this specific combination of letters,” Negari elaborates. “XYZ feels like an instinctive and natural ending for any domain name. It’s universally recognized as the last three letters of the English alphabet, making it incredibly memorable and logical for a domain extension. It’s also fascinating to note that ‘www.’, the ubiquitous subdomain, directly precedes ‘xyz’ in alphabetical order, further reinforcing .XYZ as an ideal and fitting endpoint for a web address.”
Beyond its inherent naturalness, owning xyz.com offered a significant marketing edge. “Most other gTLD applicants struggled to secure their equivalent .com domain,” Negari notes. “Having xyz.com gives us the distinct ability to offer .XYZ.com subdomains as a value-added service in conjunction with .XYZ domain names.”
The early market response has been exceptionally positive. “We’ve been offering pre-registrations for .XYZ on the xyz.com website for several months now, and we’ve observed a high level of interest from countries across the globe, with particularly strong demand emanating from China, the United States, Germany, and India,” says Negari. “It’s particularly telling that countries with rapidly expanding internet user bases are drawn to .XYZ, underscoring its true global appeal and potential.”
Negari’s vision extends far into the future. “Currently, when most people think of a domain name, their minds automatically gravitate towards three endings: .COM, .NET, or .ORG,” he explains. “My ultimate goal is that a decade from now, people will instinctively think of ‘.COM, .XYZ, .NET, .ORG,’ and within three decades, the hierarchy will shift to ‘.XYZ, .COM, .NET, .ORG.’ We are pressing a reset button on the namespace, offering everyone the chance to secure a relevant and impactful .XYZ domain name.” This ambitious goal highlights his belief in .XYZ’s potential to become a cornerstone of future digital identities, providing unparalleled competition and choice to internet users worldwide.
Unlocking Diverse Potential with .College: Beyond the Classroom
Question: While .XYZ and .NOW are generic and suitable for mass marketing by registrars, .COLLEGE appears to be quite specific. How do you intend to market .COLLEGE differently from your other domain names?
“While .COLLEGE might seem specific at first glance, its true scope as an unrestricted gTLD is far broader than just higher education institutions,” Negari clarifies. “We intend to market .COLLEGE not only to universities and colleges but also to a wide array of education-related businesses, corporations, individual students, and any group seeking a relevant and distinct internet presence within the educational sphere.”
Currently, these target markets often have limited options for a truly relevant domain name, primarily relying on .EDU. However, registering a .EDU domain is highly restrictive, requiring applicants to be accredited postsecondary institutions, with each institution typically limited to a single domain name. “The inherent restrictions of the .EDU namespace create a significant opportunity for .COLLEGE to reach a much wider and more diverse audience,” Negari asserts.

First, let’s consider the most obvious target market: academic institutions themselves. “Every institution of higher learning, such as a large university, typically encompasses numerous individual colleges and departments,” Negari explains. “Each of these colleges, whether it’s a College of Business, a College of Engineering, or a College of Arts, deserves its own unique and easily identifiable internet presence. For example, while XYZ University might use xyz.edu as its main website, its College of Business might be forced to rely on a lengthy and cumbersome subdomain like collegeofbusiness.xyz.edu. Similarly, business students might use an email address like [email protected]. This specific College of Business could greatly benefit from registering a dedicated domain like xyzbusiness.college, providing a shorter, more memorable address for faculty, students, and external stakeholders.”
Another powerful target market for .COLLEGE is corporations. “Imagine mcdonalds.college,” Negari suggests. “McDonald’s could leverage this specific website to attract college students for internships, entry-level positions, and career development programs. By having a separate .COLLEGE domain, they can distinguish themselves from competitors, presenting an innovative, fresh, and student-focused web presence. Major corporations can also utilize .COLLEGE domains to host their internal employee education programs, including professional training modules and opportunities for higher education. HR departments, in particular, will find a new, highly targeted avenue to reach potential employees and continuously educate their existing workforce.”
Finally, we turn our attention to students themselves, encompassing high school students, current college students, and various student organizations. “High school students might want to host their personal websites, showcasing their resumes and standout achievements on a student.college website,” Negari illustrates. “If a high school student named Jimmy Blake wishes to differentiate himself from hundreds of other applicants named Jimmy Blake, jimmyblake.college would serve as an impressive and memorable vehicle to do so. Furthermore, Jimmy could use a professional vanity email address like [email protected] to communicate directly with colleges, leaving a lasting impression.”
College students can also benefit immensely, hosting personal sites, blogs, or professional portfolios on a .COLLEGE domain name, providing them with the most aptly suited name for their academic and career needs. Campus organizations, including fraternities, sororities, and academic clubs, could similarly adopt appropriate .COLLEGE domain names to promote their activities and foster community.
“While .COLLEGE may initially appear to be a specific extension, its meaning extends far beyond traditional academic institutions,” Negari concludes. “It can be effectively utilized by test preparation services, financial aid businesses, individual professors, and even for niche do-it-yourself or tutorial websites, such as fingerpainting.college. The potential scope of .COLLEGE is truly infinite, and our marketing efforts will strategically emphasize this expansive versatility.”
Navigating the Competitive Landscape: The Battle for .NOW
Question: You face stiff competition for .NOW, including from Amazon.com. Now that you have secured two of the three domains you applied for, will you approach resolving the .NOW contention set differently?
“I play to win,” Negari states unequivocally. “My aim is to bring the internet the immediacy and relevance that the .NOW gTLD embodies. We are determined to pursue this extension with the same strategic focus and resolve that led to our success with .XYZ and .COLLEGE.”
Strategic Rollout: Launch, Accessibility, and Pricing Philosophy
Question: When do you anticipate each of these TLDs will open for sunrise registrations?
“We are projecting the sunrise period for both .XYZ and .COLLEGE to commence in early 2014,” Negari reveals. “We plan to implement extended sunrise periods for each extension. This is a crucial step to ensure that trademark holders are given ample time to prepare and register their respective domains, safeguarding their intellectual property in the new namespace.”
Regarding .COLLEGE specifically, Negari adds, “We will also have an exclusive, extended registration period for .EDU-accredited academic institutions, allowing them sufficient time to register theirinstitution.college domains. We understand that larger institutions often require more time for budgeting and decision-making processes, and we are committed to accommodating their needs.”
Question: What are your registration goals for each TLD, and how will they be priced?
“Since the announcement of .XYZ pre-registration and the release of our marketing materials, we have experienced an immense surge of interest from both registrars and prospective registrants,” Negari notes enthusiastically. “Our ambitious goal is to achieve 1 million .XYZ registrations within the first year of operation, escalating to 5 million registrations within the initial three years. The pricing for .XYZ is still being finalized, but it is guaranteed to be a low-cost domain extension, making it widely accessible to all internet users and promoting mass adoption.”
Turning to .COLLEGE, Negari acknowledges its more specific nature. “As you mentioned, .COLLEGE is a more targeted extension, and as such, we anticipate the number of registrations to be less than that for .XYZ,” he explains. “While the pricing for .COLLEGE is also not yet final, it will be favorably positioned and competitively priced against other popular domain extensions, ensuring its appeal to its target markets.”
Building the Future: The XYZ HAUS and Global Impact
Question: What kind of company are you building around your TLDs?

“Our plans for XYZ are truly vast, and our overarching mission is clear: to provide internet users with unprecedented competition and choice in the domain name landscape,” Negari emphasizes. “As I’ve mentioned, we are planning for millions of registrations, which will be vigorously driven by extensive marketing and promotional campaigns.”
The foundation of this ambitious endeavor is a robust, multifaceted team. “Our team will comprise dedicated social media marketing specialists, a proactive support team specifically tailored for startups utilizing .XYZ domain names, an in-house general counsel to assist registrants with Trademark Clearinghouse questions and ensure brand protection, and a general awareness and support team dedicated to assisting all prospective registrants with their inquiries and needs,” he details.
In a tangible demonstration of this long-term commitment, Negari reveals a significant development: “As we speak, I am in escrow on a prominent office building in Las Vegas, which will proudly be dubbed the ‘XYZ HAUS’ – currently known as BLOKHAUS. This dynamic college-style office environment will serve as a hub for raising awareness and educating internet users about the vast potential of new domain extensions, including both .XYZ and .COLLEGE. We project a significant expansion of our workforce, aiming to reach 100 employees at our Las Vegas location within the next three to five years.”
“Fundamentally, we are not just launching new domain names; we are actively changing the fundamental way people think about ending a web address,” Negari concludes passionately. “We are pressing a reset button on the entire internet namespace, democratizing access and giving everyone a fresh, unparalleled chance to secure a relevant, memorable, and impactful .XYZ domain name for their personal or business ventures. This is about empowering individuals and businesses to carve out their unique digital identities in a truly open and competitive environment.”
