Matt Mazur Talks Selling His Domain Search Company to Automattic

Lean Domain Search Acquired by Automattic: Matt Mazur Reveals the Story

WordPress logoIn a significant development for the web and domain industries, Automattic, the innovative company renowned for developing WordPress, has officially announced the acquisition of Lean Domain Search. This strategic move brings one of the most effective and user-friendly domain name discovery platforms into the expansive Automattic ecosystem, promising enhanced capabilities for millions of online users worldwide.

For years, Lean Domain Search carved out a niche as an indispensable resource for anyone looking to establish an online presence. Its unique approach to generating and filtering available domain names made it a standout tool for entrepreneurs, small businesses, bloggers, and developers alike. Many within the industry, including our own publications, have consistently highlighted its prowess in simplifying what can often be a daunting first step in the journey of building a website: finding the perfect, available domain name. The acquisition by a company with Automattic’s reach and resources signals a new era for this beloved service.

To gain an exclusive perspective on this pivotal acquisition and understand the deeper motivations behind it, we recently had the opportunity to speak with Matt Mazur, the ingenious founder of Lean Domain Search. Mazur candidly shared the journey of his business, the intricacies of its monetization model, the unexpected history of his connection with Automattic, and his exciting new responsibilities within the organization.

The Journey of Lean Domain Search: From Free Utility to Sustainable Freemium Model

Every successful startup navigates a complex path, and Lean Domain Search’s evolution, particularly its business model, offers valuable lessons in adaptability and market responsiveness. Initially launched as a completely free service, its transformation into a profitable freemium platform before its acquisition is a story of strategic insight and persistent refinement.

Navigating Monetization: The Challenge of Pricing Premium Domain Search Features

DNW: Now that Lean Domain Search has been acquired, the service is free. But LDS was somewhat unique in offering paid services for better searching. Was getting people to sign up to the paid version harder than you expected?

Mazur: “When I first introduced Lean Domain Search to the public in January 2012, my primary focus was on making a truly useful tool accessible to everyone. The service was entirely free to use, and its operational costs were covered solely through affiliate commissions generated when users registered a domain through one of our partners. This model was excellent for achieving rapid adoption and gathering a wide range of user feedback, which was crucial for continuous improvement.

As the platform grew, I relentlessly worked on enhancing its core functionalities. This included expanding the database of domain name suggestions, refining the matching algorithms for greater relevance, and significantly boosting the speed at which results were delivered. With each improvement, the intrinsic value offered by the free version became increasingly substantial. It reached a point where I recognized that I had created a tool delivering immense utility, prompting me to explore a sustainable business model that would support ongoing development and innovation.

This led to the decision to transition to a freemium model. The idea was to continue offering a robust free tier, which would serve the majority of casual users, while simultaneously providing an advanced, more comprehensive experience for ‘power users’ – individuals or businesses with more intensive domain search needs who would benefit from an expanded set of results and premium features. However, establishing the right price point for this premium plan proved to be far more challenging than I initially anticipated. It’s a delicate balance to strike between perceived value, affordability, and profitability.

My initial attempts at pricing were quite ambitious. I experimented with a $299 fee for two months of access or a $99 per month subscription for long-term users. The response at these price points was underwhelming; there weren’t many takers. This immediately signaled that I needed to rethink my strategy. I then embarked on a period of iterative experimentation, testing various pricing structures to understand what resonated best with my target audience. We explored options such as $24 per month, a one-time purchase for $79, an annual subscription for $199, and several other combinations. Each test provided invaluable data, allowing me to fine-tune the offering.

Ultimately, the pricing model that proved most effective was $79 for two months of access or $199 for yearly access. This structure seemed to hit the sweet spot, providing sufficient value for premium users while remaining attractive enough to drive conversions. The dedication to this experimental process truly paid off. In April 2013, which happened to be the last full month I operated Lean Domain Search with the freemium model before the acquisition, I witnessed a significant milestone: the revenue generated from the premium plans finally surpassed the income from affiliate commissions. So, yes, the initial phase of monetization was indeed difficult, but it demonstrated that with enough time, data-driven experimentation, and a willingness to adapt, a viable and successful pricing strategy could absolutely be achieved.”

A Resurfacing Connection: How Automattic and Mazur Reconnected

The acquisition story isn’t just about a successful product; it’s also about a long-standing connection and the opportune alignment of goals. Matt Mazur’s journey to Automattic wasn’t a sudden event but rather a rekindling of a dialogue that began almost a decade ago, illustrating the power of networking and perseverance in the tech world.

From Domain Pigeon’s Early Days to a WordPress.com Partnership

DNW: Did Automattic find you? Were you in talks with other suitors?

Mazur: “It’s quite a fascinating story, actually. My first interaction with Automattic, or rather with its co-founder Matt Mullenweg, dates all the way back to 2009. Mullenweg initially reached out to me after discovering Domain Pigeon – which was the conceptual predecessor to Lean Domain Search – being prominently featured on HackerNews. This early recognition from such a respected figure in the web industry was incredibly flattering and truly validating for my early efforts.

However, at that particular juncture, the timing wasn’t right. I was actively serving in the Air Force, a commitment that naturally demanded my full attention and precluded me from pursuing any external professional opportunities, including the exciting prospect of collaborating with Automattic. While the initial seed of connection was planted, circumstances simply didn’t allow it to flourish at that time.

Fast forward to just several months ago, and the stars finally aligned. I found myself browsing WordPress.com, thoroughly exploring its vast array of services and new features. As I delved deeper into the platform, it became increasingly apparent that Automattic was placing a significant emphasis on streamlining the entire process of getting online, and domain name services were becoming an ever more critical component of that user journey. It was at this moment that a thought clicked: there might still be an opportunity, even after all these years, to contribute my expertise to Automattic, specifically within their evolving domain name initiatives.

Inspired by this renewed potential, I decided to take the initiative and proactively reach out to Matt Mullenweg once again. The subsequent conversations progressed rapidly and organically, revealing a strong mutual alignment of vision and goals. These discussions ultimately culminated in the acquisition of Lean Domain Search and my joining the team. So, to directly answer your question, this acquisition wasn’t the outcome of a competitive bidding war or multiple external suitors. Instead, it was a unique convergence of historical connection, fortuitous timing, and a shared strategic vision that brought us together.”

A New Chapter: Focused Innovation for Domain Discovery within Automattic

With Lean Domain Search now integrated into Automattic, the immediate focus shifts to how Matt Mazur’s specialized expertise will be leveraged to enhance the domain name experience for the vast WordPress user base. His role promises not just the maintenance of a valued tool but also the pioneering of new advancements.

Exclusively Dedicated to Next-Gen Domain Initiatives for WordPress.com

DNW Will you work solely on domain search/discovery for Automattic or additional projects as well?

Mazur: “One of the truly remarkable aspects of Automattic’s organizational philosophy that I’ve come to deeply appreciate is its inherent flexibility and the strong culture of trust it fosters among its team members. The company actively encourages individuals to explore diverse interests and, where appropriate, dedicate a portion of their time to contributing to various projects across the organization. This approach cultivates a highly dynamic and collaborative environment, empowering employees to pursue their passions and bring fresh perspectives to different challenges.

However, for the foreseeable future and particularly during this crucial initial phase of integration and development, my efforts will be exclusively channeled towards new domain name initiatives specifically tailored for WordPress.com. My immediate and paramount objective is to apply my comprehensive knowledge and extensive experience to profoundly enhance the entire domain name search, discovery, and acquisition process for users within the WordPress ecosystem. This dedicated focus encompasses not only the strategic refinement and optimization of existing tools but also the conceptualization, design, and development of entirely novel features. The ultimate aim is to make the journey of finding and securing the ideal online identity for individuals and businesses even more intuitive, efficient, and seamless. This concentrated effort ensures that we can deliver the most impactful improvements in this critical area, ultimately empowering millions of WordPress users to build their online presence with unprecedented ease and confidence.”

Beyond “Acquihire”: Scaling a Dream to Impact Millions

The term “acquihire” often characterizes acquisitions where the primary asset being sought is the talent of the acquired company’s founder or team. While Lean Domain Search itself is a valuable product, Mazur’s perspective suggests that this acquisition goes beyond a mere talent grab, representing a profound opportunity to amplify a long-held passion.

Realizing a Vision: Empowering Global Online Presence on an Unprecedented Scale

DNW: Would you consider this an “Acquihire”?

Mazur: “Given that Lean Domain Search was officially acquired and I have now joined Automattic as an integral part of their team, it is certainly a reasonable and plausible interpretation to categorize this scenario as an ‘acquihire.’ However, what truly fuels my excitement and makes this particular opportunity so immensely rewarding extends far beyond the typical definition of simply joining a new company. For me, it represents the incredible, almost unimaginable prospect of continuing to pursue what I genuinely love to do – which is dedicating my efforts to helping people discover and secure meaningful, impactful domain names – but now on an absolutely unprecedented scale.

Operating as an independent founder, while incredibly fulfilling and empowering in its own right, inherently comes with certain limitations in terms of global reach, available resources, and the sheer number of users one can realistically impact. With Automattic, I am now a part of a colossal organization that actively empowers hundreds of millions of users across the globe to build, manage, and thrive with their online presence through the power of WordPress. This provides an unparalleled platform to dramatically expand the impact and reach of my life’s work. To be able to contribute to such a vast and incredibly diverse user base, developing and refining tools and services that simplify a fundamental and often complex aspect of establishing an online presence, is genuinely a dream come true. It’s about leveraging the immense infrastructure, the collective expertise, and the vibrant community of Automattic to realize a grander vision of making domain discovery universally accessible, efficient, and intuitive for every single person embarking on their digital journey.”

The Future of Domain Discovery: A Synergistic Vision with Automattic and Matt Mazur

The integration of Lean Domain Search into Automattic’s portfolio marks not just an acquisition, but a pivotal moment that is poised to reshape the landscape of domain name discovery within the WordPress ecosystem. For Automattic, this strategic move underscores a deeper commitment to enhancing the foundational user experience on WordPress.com, directly integrating sophisticated domain search capabilities that were once separate.

This synergy is expected to dramatically streamline the onboarding process for new users, making the initial, crucial step of finding and registering the perfect domain name more intuitive and seamless than ever before. By combining Lean Domain Search’s innovative technology with WordPress.com’s robust platform, users will likely benefit from a cohesive experience that simplifies the journey from idea to live website, offering tailored domain suggestions alongside comprehensive web hosting and site-building tools.

For Matt Mazur, this partnership represents the ultimate realization of an entrepreneurial vision. It’s an extraordinary opportunity to scale his passion and specialized expertise to a global audience, directly impacting millions of aspiring website owners and businesses worldwide. Under Automattic’s expansive wing, the core philosophy of Lean Domain Search—simplifying the often-complex process of domain discovery—is set to evolve, promising a new generation of innovative features and a more deeply integrated, intuitive experience for WordPress users. This powerful collaboration is fundamentally poised to redefine how individuals and organizations embark on their digital journeys, ensuring that the critical first step of securing an ideal domain name is not just easy, but truly inspiring.
