Domains registered for vibe coded sites show high renewal rates.
Nordic Domain Days began in Stockholm on Sunday. I will publish a full wrap-up later this week.
On Monday, Stuart Dinnes, who leads account management for European domain registrars at Verisign, shared notable statistics I haven’t seen before.
During Verisign’s Q1 investor conference call, the company reported a first-year renewal rate for .com domains in the mid-40% range. Renewal rates for the second year and beyond climb to the mid-80s.
Where the data becomes particularly interesting is when domains are actually used. Certain attachments and uses can significantly improve first-year renewal rates.
For example, domains connected to a website or configured for email show a roughly 9% higher first-year renewal rate. Even a simple domain forward increases renewal likelihood by about 13%.
Most strikingly, domains registered for websites built with AI tools—sometimes referred to as “vibe coded” sites—exhibit about a 20% higher first-year renewal rate.

A significant caveat: this observation is derived from a very small subset of domains. Domains must be at least a year old to register a renewal, and much of the recent growth in AI site builders has taken place in the last 6–12 months.
Verisign included a slide showing the relative volume of new registrations by usage. The chart lacked a labeled y-axis, but visually it highlights how small the AI-built segment was a year ago:

As general content sites lose some importance with users increasingly getting answers from AI, domains that power AI-generated or AI-assisted sites could become a key growth area for the domain market.
To encourage higher-quality registrations, Verisign has begun rewarding registrars for new .com and .net registrations that are more likely to renew—specifically those tied to a product or service, such as email hosting.
Overall, the share of first-year .com and .net registrations that Verisign classifies as attached to an online presence has risen significantly over recent years, reaching 18% last year.
The company also examined zone files from other registries to estimate first-year renewal rates across different TLDs:

.Org recorded the highest estimated first-year renewal rate at 51%. That performance is notable given that the Public Interest Registry, which operates .org, implemented registrar incentives focused on registration quality many years ago.
Many new gTLDs on the slide rely on low-cost first-year registrations, and their renewal rates are higher than some might expect. This highlights how inexpensive initial registrations can be effective for building a recurring customer base.
