Trump remark drives fresh surge in Slovenia’s .si domain registrations

The country-code top-level domain for Slovenia, .si, has experienced a notable spike in registrations over the past ten days. The acceleration in new domain activity appears tied to recent public comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump about rebranding artificial intelligence as “super intelligence.” That phrase — which already exists in discussions about advanced AI — set off a wave of domain investors registering .si names that reference the term and related concepts.
The uptick began gradually, with some registrants responding to a social media poll the former president posted about renaming AI. The effect intensified following a United Nations speech on September 22 in which Trump said the U.S. government would refer to artificial intelligence as “super intelligence” going forward. Domain speculators and investors responded quickly, driving daily registration numbers well above typical August levels.
To put the surge in context, the .si registry recorded 3,515 registrations during the entire month of August. Since the speech on September 22, .si has seen daily registration totals exceed that August figure on several individual days. As of 10:30 am Pacific Time on September 28, the registry logged 4,311 new .si registrations in the previous 24-hour period alone.
Those volumes are significant for a TLD that reached roughly 219,000 total registrations at that same time. A snapshot of register.si from September 4 showed about 190,000 active .si domains, indicating the zone expanded by more than 15% over the course of the month. That rapid growth highlights how a high-profile event or public remark can quickly influence domain market behavior, particularly for concise country-code extensions that are easily repurposed for branding or speculative use.
From the registry’s perspective, the financial impact is meaningful but modest compared with some other recent domain windfalls. The .si registry’s wholesale price is €10 per domain, so the additional September registrations have generated roughly an extra €300,000 in revenue for the month. That figure represents a solid boost for a national registry, though it does not approach the larger sums seen in some markets where country-code domains have become shorthand for tech topics (for example, domains associated with artificial intelligence).
Looking ahead, continued momentum for .si will depend on whether the term “super intelligence” gains broader adoption in media, government usage, and public discourse beyond the initial statement. Domain interest often tracks attention: if the phrase persists in headlines, marketing, or policy discussions, investors and brands may continue to target .si names. If the conversation fades, registration rates are likely to return toward more typical levels.
Beyond the immediate spike, the situation underscores a recurring pattern in the domain industry: short news cycles and viral language can produce fast, measurable effects in registration activity. Country-code extensions that can be read as words, acronyms, or industry shorthand are particularly vulnerable to sudden surges when a phrase captures public imagination.
For the .si registry and the Slovenian namespace, the recent wave of registrations offers both a revenue uptick and a reminder of the global market forces that affect national TLDs. Whether the increase will sustain into the coming months remains uncertain and will hinge on how widely the new terminology is adopted outside of the original context.
