Google domain name parking patent application — An interesting
Idea sounds a lot like zero click monetization.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office just published a Google patent application related to domain name parking.
Named Systems and Methods of Providing Parked Domain Content, application 13/631472 (embedded below) ought to give pause to providers of zero click domain monetization solutions.
Essentially, the patent application describes a system in which a total advertising value is assigned to a parked page. An advertiser can then bid to be the exclusive content provider for the parked page. If the bid beats the total value, then the exclusive content is displayed.
I read this as zero click advertising. In zero click systems, an advertiser can bid to redirect a visitor from a parked page to his site. If the bid is higher than the value the parking firm assigns to the visitor for traditional monetization (e.g. pay-per-click ads), then the visitor is redirected.
Of course, Google could be thinking regarding displaying content directly on a domain name. Perhaps an YouTube user would be willing to pay to have their video shown when someone visits a relevant domain name.
The patent application was filed in 2012 and published by the USPTO today.
