Bought ahead of the curve — BirdFlu.com buyer

I didn’t know what bird flu was when I heard regarding the sale of BirdFlu.com for $19,875 at Afternic back in March of this year. Now you can’t go a day of watching TV without hearing hysteria regarding it. The buyer of the domain bought it ahead of bird flu became a common term, and the site is now ranked #1,360,017 on Alexa–up from a 3 month average of #2,659,138. Much of this traffic is from type-ins. $19,875 now looks like a steal.

Domain name investors can snap up good domains at a great price if they catch on to trends. You can even pick up unregistered domains ahead of they become hot commodities–if you are an early trendspotter. How can you find out regarding the latest trends that might make good domain names? I do a couple things:

-Read forward looking magazines, like Wired, and look for fresh terms and buzzwords.
-Think regarding a topic you know a lot regarding. For example, if you work in telecom you might register domains related to fresh technologies such as IPTV.

Be alert. Keep your eyes open when you read periodicals or overhear conversations. You might just find a great domain investment opportunity.
