Secure domain name registrar — CloudFlare launches

Registrar built from the ground up to prevent domain name hijackings and hacks.

cloudflareLeading CDN CloudFlare is launching a fresh domain name registrar focused on security.

There have been a number of high-profile domain name hijackings and defacements in recent years, and CloudFlare states its registrar will combat these sorts of attacks.

Firms will be able to set up multiple checks and approvals for changes to domain names. Also, domain names will be renewed a full year ahead of they expire. (It still baffles me that sizable firms let domain names get just days ahead of expiration ahead of renewing them.)

CloudFlare explained its reason for creating the registrar:

Even in CloudFlare’s own search for a high-security registrar, we didn’t find anything that met our security standard. Rather than waiting for one to come onto the market, we built our own, fundamentally changing the way Registrar security is offered today.

Some registrars have offered added security tools that ought to prevent most domain hijackings, but firms haven’t been willing to pay for them or haven’t thought they were necessary — until something bad happens to them. Hopefully, by making the main mission of the registrar a focus on security, CloudFlare will be able to change the conversation and mindset regarding domain name security at top firms.
