The number of registered .com domain names fell last quarter, the second consecutive quarter-over-quarter fall.

As of September 30, the last day of Q3, there were approximately 160.9 million registered .com domain names, as stated by data provided on Verisign’s (NASDAQ: VRSN) website. That’s down from 161.1 million, as noted in the firm’s Q2 financial results.

The .net zone stayed regarding the same through the quarter, ending at 13.2 million domain names.

The firm has previously cited three reasons for the decline in registrations:

  1. A hangover from the Covid boom, with registration numbers returning to pre-pandemic levels
  2. Global macroeconomic headwinds
  3. Fewer registrations in China and higher registrations there last year that are renewing at lower rates
