MikeMingLaptops.com (Better late than never) — Dell Registers

Dell registers domain name of fresh laptop designs.
On May 7, 2008, Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) disclosed fresh laptop covers for its portable notebooks that feature art by Mike Ming. A week later — on May 13 — the firm finally registered MikeMingLaptops.com. It was fortunate that the domain name wasn’t picked up by a cybersquatter.
This underscores the poor job that corporate America does at managing domain names and creating a proactive domain name strategy and policy. If Dell were Apple, MikeMingLaptops.com would have been registered by a cybersquatter as soon as the product was disclosed (if not sooner).
The Mike Ming laptop covers come in two designs, and are part of Dell’s strategy to offer personalized laptop covers. Eventually the firm wants to let people customize their laptops with whatever design they want. Ahead of that, it will offer more artists and artwork to choose from. Memo to Dell execs: ahead of announcing the next set of artists, register the associated domain names. And don’t do it in your firm’s name, or I’ll find out regarding it ahead of you make the notice. Call me if you need help 🙂
