Results and analysis from over 150 expired domain name auctions: EDR
In this stretch’s Expired Domain Note (EDR), Joseph Peterson gives the rundown on over 150 expired domain name auctions.
“Smart” is the word of the day, judging by the top 2 expired auction results from GoDaddy. It’s not surprising, really. Computing has infiltrated our lives, and smart phones are conquering both the younger generation and the developing world. But although the #1 spot is regarding mobile tech, the #2 domain, SmartRoom.com, seems to be regarding the opposite — smart sensors in the home and office, I’m guessing.
Interesting to see these ideas side by side … and Ideas.net ($2610) nipping at their heels. Actually, 3 out of the top 12 GoDaddy auctions were .NETs:

Somebody’s throwing a party with those 5 “Party Buses” domains — all of them for cities in the American South. But the guy who ought to really be throwing a party is the buyer of Vagoneta.net for a mere $121. I’ve sold nearly identical automotive Spanish .NETs for more 10-20 times that price, and it pained me to give away the tip the prior week!
Most of us are prejudiced against certain kinds of domains, and it’s tempting to filter out the sales as flukes or mere noise. But I have to admit that the market value for hyphens and .BIZ domains is a little bit better than it ought to be. In the list above, there are 4 sales of hyphenated domains (2 .NETs, 2 .COMs) between $330 and $1049. Plus a couple of 2-word .BIZ domains in the mid $300 range.
It’s also interesting to see a couple of Broadway shows swept up at one time. Presumably, they were heavily promoted while tickets were on sale; and now they’re laden with links.
NameJet had a very strong sale with the first name Carlo.com — over $10k. The next 2 are each category killers. Helados.com is Spanish for ice cream(s). Farther down the list, you’ll see Cubierta.com — a bargain at $395. Oh, and GoDaddy had its own Spanish bargains — Superofertas.com (“Super Deals”).

Travel is a consistent theme in this NameJet chart: MedicalTravel.com, TheVillas.com, CountryTours.com, GolfDestinations.com.
Another pattern is found in the LLLL .COMs. Between GoDaddy and NameJet, you’ll find these: UAUU.com, RGRR.com, FJFF.com, PJPP.com, etc.
