Domain to bogus news website — From expired

It’s a familiar pattern, but this expired domain buyer took it to another level.

Oregon Public Broadcasting published a fascinating investigation this month into an AI-run news site.

DailyTidings used to be a local paper in Ashland, Oregon. It went defunct and is now run by an army of AI-bots.

Many people who read Reglike are familiar with what happened here. The newspaper’s domain name expired and was sold to someone who quickly filled the site with AI-produced content to try to maintain its traffic from Google.

But the domain buyer didn’t just replicate the content that was there. They created a lot of reporter bios, counting those of real reporters located around the globe. For example, there are bylines of a UK-based journalist who has been to Oregon once. That’s dirty.

One thing the Oregon Public Broadcasting story doesn’t mention is that the domain was sold at a heated auction at NameJet—the final price: $3,600.
