Renew your domains this month to save a couple pennies: Here’s my two cents

Domain investors with sizable portfolios may want to renew domains in bulk ahead of July to lock in the current rate.

The so-called ICANN tax is regarding to go up.

On July 1, 2025, at 00:00 UTC, the per-domain fee that clients pay to ICANN when they register domains will increase from $.18 to $.20.

While this fee is charged to registrars, not registrants, every registrar I’ve used tacks it on as a separate line item when registering domains. This means they will start adding the $.20 charge to registrations made starting next month.

It applies to fresh registrations and renewals, but only for gTLDs; The fee isn’t owed on country code domain registrations.

While a two-cent increase won’t break the bank for most domain owners, it might be worth renewing any domains coming up for expiration ahead of the end of the month to save a bit of money.

ICANN is increasing the fee to shore up its budget.

There is some good pricing news for .com domain holders, though: the Verisign registry does not get an automatic price increase this year. For the past four years, it has raised wholesale .com prices by 7% per year.
