Well, this is the year.

For the first time since 2012, entities wishing to control their own top level domain name can apply.

The window to apply is tight, still, as applications will be accepted from April 30 to August 12. Applicants need to get all of their ducks in a row, counting selecting a back-end registry provider and lining up financing.

To help interested applicants better understand the process, ICANN is hosting two webinars this month.

On January 20, ICANN will host an introductory meeting for those fresh to the domain industry and the fresh TLD program.

On January 27, ICANN will host a more advanced meeting that will outline the entire application process and its stages.

People interested in applying would be advised to start digging into the applicant guidebook if they haven’t by now. The 440-page guidebook is available here (pdf).
