214-Page Comment Analysis Paper — ICANN Releases

ICANN summarizes comments from second draft fresh gTLD applicant guidebook.

ICANN has released a 214 page document summarizing feedback to its second draft applicant guidebook for fresh top level domain names. I spent my Sunday evening reading (OK, sometimes skimming) through it. Today I will write a few posts covering some of my concerns, counting:

1. How ICANN seems to be capitulating to Governmental Advisory Committee’s (GACs) demands to protect top level and second level ‘place’ names.

2. Questioning if software firms will really support hundreds of fresh top level domain names.

3. Explaining how ICANN will address concerns regarding its two whitewash notes on demand for fresh gTLDs — by hiring the same person who wrote the initial notes.

The note includes comments from a number of familiar faces in addition to myself: Internet Commerce Association, Jothan Frakes, Ron Jackson, George Kirikos, and Michael Berkensm, to name a few.
