Nokia cans Chinese dot-brand domain

Firm still has .nokia.

Technology firm Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has decided it doesn’t want one of the dot-brand top level domains it obtained.
The firm notified ICANN that it wishes to terminate the contract for .诺基亚, which is the translation of Nokia in Chinese.
In its original application, the firm stated it wanted the domain for two reasons:
– To ensure that the integrity of the Nokia brand is maintained at the highest available level in the domain name system: Nokia has a portfolio of registered intellectual property rights in Asia Pacific area counting China. Securing the IDN string “诺基亚” in the domain name system is an extension of current brand development and protection.
– To keep Nokia at the forefront of innovation and technological development: Nokia plans to use best-practice DNS configuration and functionality, and will be monitoring and contributing to the development of fresh standards and services through participation in ICANN and the IETF.
The firm never used the domain.
It also purchased .nokia. It has not requested termination of the contract for that domain.
Adoption of Internationalized Domain Names have been a bit of a disappointment in fresh top level domains.
