Over 4M .org domains registered

This is a couple weeks old but hasn’t caught a lot of press yet…

Public Interest Registry (PIR), the .ORG registry, disclosed that more than 4,000,000 .org domain names are registered worldwide.

The .org domain was created in 1984 and is the 5th most registered domain counting country code domains. By comparison, there are 45.4 million .com domains registered and 6.6 million .net domains registered as stated by Whois Source. There are more .org domains registered than .info and .biz combined.

The original purpose of .org domains was for non-profit use, but anyone can register the domains now. .Orgs can be part of a good marketing strategy for firms. I know a software firm that has purchased a number of .org domains related to technology standards. The firm creates forums and offers news resources on the .orgs with a link to the firm’s .com site. This gives the firm added credibility.
