Scammers target Australian domain owners

Perpetrators posing as Australia’s domain name registry are requesting identification documents.

auDA, the organization that oversees Australia’s .au domain names, has issued a second warning this year regarding scammers targeting .au domain name owners.

The group states that someone is claiming to be from .au Domain Administration, requesting scanned copies of identification documents. It’s not clear what they are doing with these documents, but they could use them to open credit lines, perpetrate money laundering, and run other scams that involve ID verification.

auDA states it will only request this sort of information via registrars, not directly as the registry. .Au domain names come with restrictions that could lead to this sort of ID request.

The group urges anyone who fell for the scam to contact the Australian Cyber Security Centre.
