To Singapore: Single Letter Domain Names Coming

Single letter domain names to be allocated for .sg country code domain name.

Single letter domain names are coming — to Singapore, that is.

Singapore Network Information Center (SGNIC) disclosed it will be allocating single letter domain names (A to Z) across both the second level and third level. This means you will be able to pick up A.sg as well as A.com.sg, A.org.sg, A.net.sg, A.edu.sg, A.gov.sg, A.per.sg.

Entities interested in applying for the domain names must apply through their registrar between December 1 and January 9. The application must include a deposit of 5,000 Singapore Dollars, or regarding $3,300 USD. The minimum fee to acquire the domains will be 20,000 Singapore Dollars, or regarding $13,300 USD. If more than one entity applies for a particular domain name, the domain will be auctioned off. If any domains are not claimed they will be reserved by the registry for later release.

Trademark holders have first rights, although I’d be shocked if someone is able to claim trademark rights to a single letter.

ICANN has considered releasing the remaining single character domain names across global top level domains. Entities used to be able to register these domain names ahead of ICANN shut the door. For example, PayPal picked up X.com through its merger with the bank that owned X.com. PayPal right now uses the domain name for its PayPal Labs site.
