$40,000 from reverse domain name hijacking case — Telepathy scores

HVAC firm agrees to pay $40,000 following filing cybersquatting complaint in abuse of the UDRP.

In May 2017, Nat Cohen’s domain name investment firm Telepathy successfully defended its domain name AirZone.com in a UDRP. A World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) panel found that Corporacion Empresarial Altra S.L., which owns the domain name AirZone.es, had engaged in reverse domain name hijacking by filing the case.

WIPO panels cannot hand out monetary penalties for reverse domain name hijacking…but courts can. So Telepathy filed suit.

It has entered into a settlement agreement (pdf) with the HVAC firm. The agreement requires Corporacion Empresarial Altra S.L. to pay Telepathy $40,000. Telepathy has recovered money for reverse domain name hijacking in other cases, too.

Telepathy finds itself on the receiving end of lots of frivolous UDRPs since of its high-quality portfolio of valuable domain names (counting many three-letter .coms). Lawsuits filed against perpetrators ought to make firms think twice ahead of filing a UDRP against Telepathy.
