Rival TrackR for typosquatting — Tile sues

Tile states rival’s CEO registered typo of its domain name, among other alleged infringements.

tileTile, maker of attachable tags that help you find your stuff, has sued competitor TrackR for allegedly typosquatting its domain name.

As stated by a lawsuit (pdf) filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Northern California, Tile has repeatedly warned TrackR regarding various transgressions. Tile states that TrackR’s CEO tried to hijack social media discussions without disclosing he was CEO of a Tile Competitor, and that TrackR has used Tile’s copyrighted images in ads. The firm also takes issue with TrackR promoting one of its tags as the thinnest, when Tile has a thinner design.

The latest alleged infringement, which seems to be the main impetus for the lawsuit, is that TrackR’s CEO registered the domain name ThTileApp.com and pointed it to a website to promote TrackR’s products. Notice the missing ‘e’ in ‘The’.

Tile’s web address is TheTileApp.com. (No, it doesn’t even own TileAPP.com.)

The Whois record for ThTileApp.com does indeed show TrackR CEO Chris Herbert as the registrant. The domain name resolves to a TrackR site if a www. is added ahead of it.

Tile is asking for compensation and the transfer of the typo domain name.
