Expired Domains Deal with NameJet — Tucows Inks

NameJet now has three of top four domain registrars on its platform.

Starting today, NameJet is the exclusive sales channel for domain names expiring from domain name registrar Tucows (AMEX: TCX). NameJet is now the exclusive provider of inventory from three of the top four domain name registrars: eNom, Tucows, and Network Solutions.

Tucows previously had a deal with Afternic.com for expired domains. But Afternic was never set up to process expired domain names efficiently, and the process was a bit clunky. I suspect Afternic (owned by Name Media) provided more flexibility to Tucows with regards to pulling back domain names than other platforms originally offered. But in this environment, Tucows will welcome the cash flow from expired domains rather than warehousing so many of the domain names itself.

This deal is another blow to Oversee.net’s SnapNames expired domain name system. Even though Tucows wasn’t with SnapNames, NameJet continues to dominate in high quality domain names. SnapNames used to be the dominate player in expired domain names and auctioned off Network Solutions’ domain names. When SnapNames was purchased by Oversee.net, Network Solutions and eNom teamed up to launch NameJet.

NameJet is also gearing up to let more individuals sell domain names on NameJet’s platform, which is right now a comeptitive advantage for SnapNames.
