Domain names registered in first 24 hours — 55,367 .xxx

Big numbers in latest top level domain release.

I just got an email from ICM Registry regarding .xxx registration results in the first 24 hours.

55,367 fresh .xxx domain names were registered. That brings total registrations (counting sunrise and landrush) to 159,351 as of noon EST today.

Many of these domains won’t resolve, of course — they were registered by non adult firms wishing to block their brands from becoming porn sites.

High registration prices of around $100 will keep a check on total registration numbers. It ought to also keep a check on the level of cybersquatting on .xxx.

The numbers mean ICM registry brought in regarding $3.3 million in revenue in the past 24 hours, with over half a million headed to International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFFOR).
