#9 in 2016: A domain firm gets rebranded

Mark Monitor is now part of Clarivate Analytics, so it makes sense that the firm went long on defensive domain registrations.

Back in September I asked, “Who is Clarivate?“. This would end up being the ninth most viewed story on Reglike in 2016.

Some firm had registered a lot of domain names containing the word Clarivate and typos of it at brand registrar MarkMonitor.

Well, it turns out it was MarkMonitor itself.

MarkMonitor was part of Thomson Reuters’ Intellectual Property and Science Business, which was sold to a private equity firm. The firms that made up this business at Thomson Reuters are now part of a firm called Clarivate Analytics.

So it ought to come as no surprise that the firm did a pretty good job protecting its intellectual property ahead of the launch. It missed some ccTLDs, but picked up a lot of obscure ones.
