Contract pulled, domain in temporary limbo — .CD registry

Domain name for Democratic Republic of Congo undergoes surprise transition.

There are risks to registering country code domain names, example #1,761…

Société Congolaise des Postes et Télécommunications in Democratic Republic of Congo has canceled its contract with CONIC, Webnet Africa, Mikuba (all the same group) to manage the .cd top level domain name.

This apparently came by surprise to domain name registrars. In a newsletter to clients, domain name registrar Moniker stated that it happened “surprisingly and without prior notice.”

As stated by a translated statement at nic.cd, the registry agreement was canceled “due to irregularities in the managment [sic] of the Registry.”

Domain names will not expire during the transition. Registrations and other transactions are not right now possible, but .cd domain names ought to continue to resolve.

DomainTools has records of over 5,000 registered .cd domains.
