Chinese registrars, Uniregistry continue surge: .Com Winners & Losers

Chinese surge continues in latest .com notes

ICANN has published Verisign’s registrar data for .com from October, and it shows the continued surge of registrations in China.

Last month I wrote regarding how two Chinese domain name registrars, HiChina and eName, surged into the top 5 registrars worldwide for .com registrations. Both registrars remain in the top 5 in the latest note.

Also, Uniregistry led the “net transfers in” board for the second month in a row. Its net fresh .com adds are relatively modest in comparison to inbound transfers.

Note that ICANN publishes registry notes three months in arrears, so these official numbers are from October.

Let’s start by reviewing which registrars added the most fresh .com domain name registrations:

1. GoDaddy* 856,845
2. eName 326,125
3. HiChina 294,305
4. eNom** 229,655
5. PublicDomainRegistry 125,145

When it comes to registrars that won the transfer game, here are the top five registrars for October that have retail operations. These numbers are the net gains following taking into consideration transfers-out:

1. Uniregistry +26,070
2. eName +12,085
3. Mesh Digital +9,414
4. Google +7,120
5. HiChina +6,533

Here are the registrars that lost the most to transfers, offset by the number of inbound transfers:

1. Tucows -17,950
2. Fabulous -13,481
3. FastDomain -13,088
4. Network Solutions -10,492
5. Moniker -7,787

*Includes GoDaddy and Wild West Domains **Includes eNom and Name.com, but not dropcatching registrars.
