Expired Domain Name sales results

Joseph Peterson reviews the past week in expired domain name sales.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So, rather than explain GoDaddy’s $6.8k sale of DivaZoo.com, let me just say, “See for yourself!”   This product line sells at mega-retailers like Amazon and Walmart but apparently has a wide distribution in smaller home decorating stores also. So if that brand is the buyer, then the domain’s price makes sense. (Note: I stripped the link’s URL of its affiliate identifier; so nobody gets a commission if you buy a hula-dancing hippopotamus.)

WebCapital.com intrigues primarily since it sold 4 days ahead of yesterday’s launch of .CAPITAL by Donuts. As you might anticipate, Web.capital is reserved by the registry. We may well find that Donuts is the .COM’s buyer. Otherwise, split ownership looks problematic.

For similar reasons, the sale of PayClub.com (at $1280) is notable. Its alter ego, Pay.club, yields a “Not Found” result in whois lookups.

49MP3.com is perplexing as a $4.5k sale until you realize that the former website was ranked 32,104 by Alexa among websites worldwide. For comparison, Reglike.com is right now #22,109 (11,555 in the USA).

Is a 4-word domain for an old movie really worth $1.7k (AmericanCasinoTheMovie.com)?  For roughly the same price, a guy could buy AllInclusiveTravel.com — a strong, descriptive brand name for a lucrative industry that goes everywhere and won’t go away. Be that as it may, someone who’s following inbound links or who wants to maintain a preexisting website has nothing in common with domain investors, even though we coexist in the sales charts.

If I were to nominate a “Most Gratuitous” purchase this stretch, it might be Flirch.com. Why pay nearly $600 for “Flirch” when “Flurch” and “Flerch” remain unregistered?  Maybe I ought to ask TheLifeMaster.com.

Among the better buys, I’d point out ChoralGroups.com ($130), NationalLaw.com ($306), and SafeDownload.com ($420). LetsGym.com is also a pretty cool brand name.

NameJet produced a strong Spanish domain sale. ElHeraldo.com (“The Herald”) will likely be used by a newspaper. Which paper?  Take your pick: ElHeraldo.co, ElHeraldo.hn, ElHeraldoDeChihuahau.com.mx, ElHeraldo.com.ec, ElHeraldo.com.ar, ElHeraldoDeBajio.com, Heraldo.es, Heraldo.mx, ElHeraldoDeChiapas.com.mx, HeraldoDePuebla.com.mx, ElHeraldo.net, ElHeraldoDeCordoba.com.mx, ElHeraldoAustral.cl, ElHeraldoDeSaltillo.mx, HeraldoDeMadrid.es, ElHeraldoDeTabasco.com.mx, etc., etc. Colombia, Honduras, Mexico, Ecuador, Argentina, Spain, Chile … Virtually every city in every country has a newspaper called “The Herald” / “El Heraldo”.

Not all Americans realize that, in the United Kingdom, “let” means “rent” and “holiday” means “vacation”. Accordingly, the bidding was less intense for LetDirect.com ($705) and HolidayRental.net ($353) than we would have seen for RentDirect.com or VacationRental.net. The second of these — HolidayRental.net — was extremely undervalued, in my opinion.

PIN.us might prove to be the bargain of the week, given the popularity of Pinterest and its clones. But I’d say SummerProgram.com comes close. When parents enroll their kids in summer programs, they spend a lot more than the $355 purchase price of this domain.

Every week, I pick a few expired domain auctions / backorders for the week ahead. Honestly, you guys get my leftovers, since I don’t want competition for items I might bid on. But there’s plenty out there. Some of these are interesting:

No matter how much you enjoy Indian spinach dishes, do NOT bid on Saag.com. Both Chrome and Firefox issue malware warnings for this domain. Vyper.com is a promising name for any hyper-masculine brand. TaxErrors.com are worth money to accountants. IndianFootball.com ought to be on people’s minds during the World Cup. And millions of Americans want an ItalyDreamVacation.com.
