Guru renewals, NameJet, GoDaddy and more: EDR
In this stretch’s Expired Domain Note (EDR), Joseph Peterson takes a look at renewals of domains counting the term “guru”, hits and misses in this stretch’s expired domain sales, and some domains to backorder for next week.
Probably the most significant recent news for the expired domain market has been the emergence of DropCatch.com. The previously closed system instrumental in building HugeDomains’s massive portfolio is now open for backorders. Some domainers say too open. But that’s all discussed in an earlier article.
I’m no guru, and crystal balls are inexact at best. Still, today is yesterday’s future. So I wanted to see what happens to 2013 gurus in 2014. Specifically, I tallied up all the expiring “guru” suffix .COMs as a way to anticipate what might happen to .GURUs expiring next year. This stretch, I can note on the outcomes.
The prior week at GoDaddy, I found 65 [keyword]Guru.COMs in expired auctions and 33 in post-auction closeout bins. Following tracking those 98 gurus, I counted only 3 sales: PricesGuru.com ($28), Hitel-Guru.com ($25), and HeathcareGuru.com ($5). Another 5 were either renewed or purchased following deletion: CouponsGuru.com, MyStaffingGuru.com, SMSJokesGuru.com, SunroomGuru.com, and WSGuru.com.
By the way, that wasn’t a typo for “Healthcare”; it was indeed “Heathcare” [sic]. A more expensive typo purchase was WordNewsOnline.com for $262. Slow down or invest in glasses, guys!
NameJet auctions the prior week included some good items:

|---|---|---|---|

| Transvestite.org | 79 | 41196.com | 70 |
“Amador” is Spanish for lover / suitor … and a county in California. So it will be interesting to see whether it is developed as, say, a dating website or a local directory.
Equally ambiguous is HMSPortugal.org. “HMS” is a common title for British vessels — “Her Majesty’s Ship”, as in the Gilbert and Sullivan operetta, “HMS Pinafore”. Still, this domain was actually used for a Harvard Medical School program until 2011. Given the extra weight given to .EDU backlinks, I expect this $291 purchase was SEO-motivated.
While I’ve seen fewer 5-digit numerical domain selling at auction for significant prices this stretch, I am seeing more .TVs. The 4 here averaged $250 apiece.
Domains like RehabClinic.com and CommercialPainter.com have clear applications. Other sectors tend to be less obvious to buyers. For example, lobbyists spend more than $510 to shape city ordinances; so Ordinances.com is more notable than its purchase price. Transvestite.org and ProgrammingTools.com were dirt cheap at $79 apiece. But the best buy in this list? SouthSeattle.com. The buyer is lucky I forgot to bid.
GoDaddy was active too:

JulioCesar.com isn’t just a Roman emperor. Wikipedia has articles regarding 77 different people names “Julio Cesar”. Most likely this one refers to a Brazilian goalkeeper. Render unto Caesar that which is redundant, states FinancialWealth.com … in case you didn’t know that wealth tends to be financial. Gold overcomes hyphens, evidently, based on the $800 sale of Gold-Today.com.
.NET is often more valuable for IT-themed topics. Witness KeyLogger.net. That’s the technology that allows identity thieves to record this sentence I’m typing. But it also has legitimate purposes.
ChiefEngines.com ought to belong to the folks at ChiefPerformance.com, who are all regarding boat engines. As for NakedAndAfraid.com, it’s clearly aiming at a gimmicky reality TV show for wilderness survival in the nude. Even setting aside the trademark violation, this is not a smart buy (in my view) since the show will be past its prime very quickly. Domainers often expect to get rich by targeting short-lived TV shows and movies.
Last and maybe least, here is a list of upcoming expired domain auctions — some of which may appeal to some of you:
