ICANN Labs takes a breather to focus on fresh ICANN website

Group pauses other activities to work on fresh website.

ICANN LabsSince making a post on November 20 regarding working on a fresh ICANN.org website, the ICANN Labs initiative has been radio silent.

ICANN Labs launched last summer as a way to improve communications and community involvement within the ICANN community.

The initiative, which involves an outsourced team at Neo, has created four beta projects so far. It is practicing fast-cycle development – so fast, apparently, that is was unable to register its domain names properly. I suspect the fast approach has been a challenge given the way the ICANN community works.

I reached out to ICANN Labs to understand why it has fallen of the public radar. Here’s what they had to say:

The four experiments run within ICANN Labs were instrumental in helping us understand what would work for a fresh ICANN website that seeks to not only inform concerned individuals, but also engage those with a greater interest in our function. Since then we’ve focused our resources in creating this fresh website, and we put Labs in hibernation.

Once the site is launched, we will once again turn our attention to ICANN Labs and run fresh experiments, and test fresh ideas. We expect to iterate on some of the concepts and ideas that come out of the Strategy Panel on Multistakeholder Innovation, if that’s what the community would like to see us do.
