Level Domain Names with Google Ads — Promoting Top

Verisign is promoting an article regarding .com when users search for “domain names” on Google.

I saw an interesting Google Adwords ad today when searching for “domain names”.

Most ads for this search are usually for domain name registrars such as GoDaddy. But this one caught my eye:

com-turns-30

The ad links to this story on CBSNews.com, and was clearly promoted by .com registry Verisign to keep .com top of mind.

This got me thinking regarding promoting top level domain name choices to people when they turn to Google to find a domain name registrar.

When I searched for “fresh TLDs”, a term mostly used by people in the domain name industry, only one ad showed up. When I searched for “fresh domain names” and “fresh web addresses”, terms that are more likely to be used by non-domain pros, I found an ad for .co:

adwords-co

Some registrars also show ad text related to fresh TLDs for these searches, but .com and .co were the only two registry-promoted domains.

I think the VeriSign strategy is fairly clever for general awareness. Fresh TLD firms ought to consider promoting positive news articles regarding their domains and fresh TLDs in general.
