Prudential, the global financial services firm, has informed ICANN that it is terminating one of its top-level domains.

In January, Prudential notified ICANN that it no longer wants to retain the .pramerica domain. This stretch, ICANN opened a public comment period on its decision not to redelegate the string.

Prudential has not canceled its two other top level domains, .pru and .prudential.

While the firm never put .pramerica to use, it has registered many second level domains under its other top level domains. These domains, such as jobs.prudential and agents.pru, forward to pages on the firm’s main prudential.com website.

It will be interesting to see which firms apply for dot-brand top level domain names in the next round of top level domain expansion, due to kick off next year. While some firms, such as Toshiba, have gone all-in on their domains, most dot-brand applicants have barely used their domains. So far, 174 dot-brand domains have been canceled.
