Testing GoDaddy’s fresh expired domain auctions

I placed some bids on GoDaddy’s fresh TDNAM, which right now consists mostly of expiring domains once registered at GoDaddy. I just “won” one domain today. When placing a bid on an expiring domain you are presented with a disclaimer that states the domain can be renewed by the previous registrant. It’s somewhat unclear when you take ownership of the domain. Here’s the email I got from GoDaddy:

Dear Andrew,

Congratulations! You have placed the winning bid for Item Number —–.com, in the amount of $25.00.

Click here to complete your purchase by 05/11/2005 02:36 PM.

Remember that in accordance with the legal agreement you acknowledged at the time of your bid (Universal Terms of Service, UTOS), the current registrant may still renew this domain in the next a number of weeks. If the domain is renewed, we will notify you and any funds received will be refunded. If the registrant does not renew the domain, we will process a change of registrant and move the domain into your account at GoDaddy.com in approximately 45 days.

If we do not receive payment for this transaction by 05/11/2005 02:36 PM, we will offer the domain to the second highest bidder.

If you have any questions, Client Support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

So it appears that you have to pay now for the domain, and then if it’s not renewed you take ownership within 6-8 weeks. I’ll keep you posted on how it goes.
