President Donald Trump’s decision will impact future of British Indian Ocean Territory.

The issue of the .io country code domain will be up for discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump today, in a very roundabout way.

The United Kingdom has a plan to hand control of the so-called British Indian Ocean Territory to Mauritius. The territory includes a U.S. naval base on Diego Garcia.

Talk of handing over the territory has brought up questions regarding the future of the .io country code domain, which is assigned to the British Indian Ocean Territory.

Technically, if the “country” goes away, .io will be phased out. (I don’t think the domain will actually be phased out if this happens, though.)

UK officials have admitted that Donald Trump could squash the Mauritius handover, and those discussions are on the table today as Trump meets with Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

There are mixed notes on what Trump will do. Some have indicated he’s getting strong advice to nix the handover.

Still, notes out today suggest that Trump is likely to go along with the Mauritius deal following public comments he made.
