Landrush details and Premium Domains: Verisign IDNs
Landrush will not be like Early Access.
Verisign is getting ready to launch its first internationalized domain name, a Japanese transliteration of .com .コム.
Based on comments Verisign CEO James Bidzos made on an investor conference call, it seemed that the firm was considering a declining price “Early Access” model for landrush.
Early Access was popularized by Donuts, and is essentially a dutch auction model in which the price to register a domain name decreases over time.
Verisign is not actually doing this. Verisign will have a “first-come, first served” landrush that does not include a declining price model. The landrush model basically lets anyone register a domain at a higher-than-normal price.
Also, note that Verisign may attach premium prices to certain second level domain names, similar to what other fresh top level domain name firms do.
So the four phases for .コム will be:
1. Sunrise
2. Priority Period for registrants of matching second level .com domains
3. Landrush
4. General Availability
