Vint Cerf Joins Identity Digital to Shape AI Agent ID Standard

Key creator of the internet joins Innovation Labs Advisory Board

Vint Cerf, widely acknowledged as one of the pioneers behind the internet, has accepted an advisory role with Identity Digital’s Innovation Labs. His participation brings deep technical knowledge and historical perspective to the lab’s work on applying DNS technology to the emerging problem of AI agent identification.

Innovation Labs is the research and development arm of Identity Digital that is developing a framework called DNSid, intended to leverage existing Domain Name System (DNS) infrastructure to provide persistent, verifiable identities for autonomous AI agents. With Cerf joining the advisory board, Innovation Labs gains a key figure who helped design core internet protocols and helped shape global internet governance.

Cerf’s contributions to the internet are foundational: he co-designed the TCP/IP protocols that underpin packet-switched networking and helped create the architectural principles that enable the global, interoperable network we use today. He was also instrumental in the establishment and early funding of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), an organization that manages crucial internet resources. That background gives him a unique vantage point on how DNS-based systems might scale and interoperate.

At 83, Cerf recently retired from his role at Google, and his new advisory position marks a continuation of his long-standing engagement with internet evolution and governance. His presence on the Innovation Labs advisory board joins five other experienced advisors, including former ICANN Chief Technology Officer David Conrad and Paul Sagan, former CEO of Akamai. Together, this group combines technical expertise, operational experience, and industry leadership.

Identity Digital’s DNSid initiative proposes using DNS records and related mechanisms to issue what the company describes as “birth certificates” for AI agents. The concept aims to create standardized, machine-readable records that can help identify an agent’s origin, capabilities, and asserted attributes. Proponents argue that building on DNS leverages an existing, globally distributed system that already supports reliable name resolution at massive scale.

Adopting DNS-based identifiers for AI agents raises a number of complex technical and policy questions. Among them are how to establish trust in the identity records, how to manage delegation and revocation, how to prevent spoofing or impersonation, and how to protect privacy while maintaining accountability. The involvement of internet architects like Cerf and operators with deep DNS experience is intended to address those challenges from both engineering and governance perspectives.

Industry interest in using DNS for agent identity has grown in recent months, with multiple domain registries and infrastructure providers exploring compatible approaches. Supporters highlight the practical advantage of reusing mature protocols and operational practices rather than inventing an entirely new global naming infrastructure. Critics, however, caution that DNS was not originally designed for attesting non-human identities and that careful design choices will be required to avoid introducing new vulnerabilities or unintended incentives.

Innovation Labs says its work will remain research-driven and that it aims to collaborate with standards bodies, registries, platform providers, and the broader internet community. The advisory board’s role is to guide technical design, regulatory foresight, and adoption strategies so that any deployed solution can interoperate with existing systems and respect widely accepted norms for security, privacy, and accountability.

As organizations explore ways to make AI agents more transparent and accountable, DNSid represents one of several approaches under consideration. With Vint Cerf lending his experience to the project, Identity Digital is signaling a commitment to grounding the effort in principles that reflect decades of internet design and governance practice. The advisory board’s composition suggests a focus on practical implementation, cross-stakeholder dialogue, and alignment with operational realities that will matter for real-world deployment.

Observers should watch how Innovation Labs engages with standards organizations and the broader technical community in the months ahead. Any DNS-based identity scheme for AI agents will need to address not only the technical mechanics of naming and resolution but also the legal, ethical, and societal implications of creating persistent, verifiable records for autonomous systems.
