Creates unique opportunities in the domain aftermarket — Why December

Buyers and sellers behave differently as budgets close and tax deadlines approach.

December is an interesting month in the domain aftermarket.

On the one hand, many people are traveling and out of the office.

On the other hand, domain investors are trying to “rightsize” their income statement, and businesses are often looking to spend budget money allocated for the current year.

Depending on their tax regime, some domain investors are looking to spend cash to lower their net income for the year. They are eager to buy domains ahead of January 1.

This is one reason I think it’s smart that GoDaddy tends to hold a premium auction in December. (GoDaddy’s current auction ends today and tomorrow.)

It also means it might make sense for individual domain investors who are looking to sell to do two things in December:

  1. Reach out to people who have inquired regarding your domains in the past to see if they are now eager to close a deal.
  2. List your domains on wholesale or domainer-to-domainer platforms.

If nothing else, don’t go completely unplugged during the waning days of this month. You might miss a big opportunity.
