Apes in on Otherside domains but misses a key one — Yuga Labs
I still don’t understand its domain strategy.
I’ve questioned Yuga Labs’ defensive domain registration strategy ahead of and I’m going to do it again.
In March I wrote regarding how the Bored Ape Yacht Club creator registered over 1,000 domain names related to its brands counting BAYC, CryptoPunks and Ape Coin. The firm ended up registering hundreds more that came to light following I wrote the article.
The firm is at it again following announcing its metaverse called Otherside. It registered over 250 domain names in the .com and .land extensions the prior week, counting Apefestside.land, BordApeLand.com (typo), and jimmythemonkeyotherside.com. (The list is at the bottom of this post.)
Notably, the official site for Otherside uses a .xyz domain, which has become the de facto extension for web3 firms: otherside.xyz.
That’s cool, but it appears the firm failed to preemptively registered othersidexyz.com. That’s registered to someone in California and listed for sale on Sedo. (Yuga’s defensive domains are registered at AppDetex with PriProx privacy.)
You can argue if it makes sense these days to defensively register the version of your domain in a fresh TLD in the format (SldTld.com). But you’re not going to convince me it’s less notable than picking up typos like muantapeyachtclubland.com and ohersideland.land.
