Domain registrar GoDaddy (NYSE: GDDY) has secured a patent designed to address spam-induced resource depletion caused by excessive bulk domain name searches.

U.S. Patent number 12,316,600 (pdf), titled Dynamic systems for migrating spam-induced resource starvation domain name search methods of use thereof, outlines a method to identify and limit abusive domain availability checks.

Right now, domain registrars face challenges when their systems are overwhelmed by automated bots or bad actors sending high volumes of bulk domain availability requests. These excessive queries deplete computing resources, causing slowdowns or outages that negatively impact genuine users.

The patented system uses historical user data and behavioral patterns to assign “digital tickets”, or temporary authorizations that grant access for performing domain availability checks.

If a user’s request exceeds predetermined thresholds or displays suspicious patterns, the system reduces allocated resources or prompts additional authentication steps, such as a CAPTCHA.

As stated by the patent filing, GoDaddy’s machine learning model continuously evaluates user profiles, comparing current activities to historical behaviors, and predicts the likelihood of future legitimate domain searches. Verified, trusted users receive greater resource allocations, while suspicious or spam-like activity triggers protective measures.

GoDaddy applied for the patent in November 2024, and it was granted today, May 27.
