Mexico and .Mx: Hola

Mexico uses the .mx domain when targeting its home country.

I spent the last 4 days in Playa del Carmen, Mexico at an entrepreneur retreat. As always, domains were on top of my mind. Especially when I got a call Thursday morning from Moniker regarding the Oversee buyout. Unfortunately, internet access was sparse and I wasn’t able to write regarding it.

Like many countries, Mexico uses familiar domain extensions as sub domains of its country code, .mx. Mexican domain names are typically domain.com.mx. Many businesses in Mexico use .com.mx, but a number also rely on simply .com. My observation is that firms that serve only their country typically use .com.mx. Firms that have international operations or cater to people outside the country, such as hotels, usually stick with .com.

For example, here’s a photo of the domain for Hotel Cohiba at www.hotelcohibaplaya.com.

Mexico domain

Of course, many people forget the .mx at the end of Mexican domains, sending a sizable amount of typo traffic to owners of corresponding .com domains.

Few registrars offer .com.mx domains. Network Solutions charges $95 per year with a 2 year minimum for .com.mx registration.
