ICANN nukes another modest domain name registrar

Hong Kong registrar loses its accreditation.

Another day, another domain registrar losing its accreditation.

Yesterday, ICANN notified (pdf) 0101 Internet, Inc., a Hong Kong-based registrar, that it is being terminated. The notice came a day following ICANN terminated another registrar.

The registrar committed a number of sins, counting failing to pay its accreditation fees, failing to escrow domain data, and failing to publish a way for people to submit disclosure requests.

Hardly anyone will miss the registrar; it has fewer than 1,000 .com domains at last check.

ICANN will follow its standard process to transition the domain names to another registrar. It’s probably difficult to find registrars willing to take over domains from tiny registrars, as it’s probably more work than it’s worth.
