HP Say They Won’t Register Their Own TLDs — P&G and
…but these firms have a good reason not to.
Bloomberg BusinessWeek just published an article that states representatives from P&G and HP have confirmed the firms don’t plan to apply for fresh top level domain names.
A couple observations:
1. One of the reasons these firms are less likely to apply is since their natural extensions are ineligible. .PG and .HP are only two letters; they must be three. HP has by now complained regarding this to ICANN. Oh, and .pg is by now delegated to Papua Fresh Guinea.
2. Don’t be surprised if someone within the firm decides to apply for a fresh top level domain name following all. Some of this is positioning ahead of the rollout. Both of these firms may be worried regarding competitors getting their own since their names “work” with fresh TLDs, such as .IBM.
BusinessWeek states it informally surveyed 21 S&P 500 firms, none of which stated they are certain to apply.
