With Kraken for NHL team name — Seattle goes

Name was one of the options tipped off by domain registrations.

It’s official—Seattle’s NHL expansion team will be called the Kraken.

Named following a mythical sea creature, the name will play off of Seattle’s waterfront and port.

Kraken is one of the names that popped up in domain name registrations a couple of years ago. As is often the case, domain registrations can tip off naming or product plans.

A cryptocurrency exchange has used Kraken.com since at least 2013. The team is using right now using the domain name SeattleKrakenHockey.com for its website. It’s a bit long, but the team can also promote NHL.com/kraken.

The Kraken are scheduled to begin play in the 2021-2022 season. It remains to be seen exactly when that season will start given Covid-19.
